Although we don’t have a habit of calling our priesthood authorities “Father” in our religion, I’ve never been troubled by the Catholic use of the term and always understood it, as you put it, as an hyperbole. It seems to me that condemning a Catholic for calling his priest a father is as unnecessarily strict as condemning someone for using the same word to refer to their own sire, which is obviously ridiculous.

    I also find it interesting that we interpret Matt. 16:18-19 exactly the same way. I’ve found that those who interpret it more loosely also deny the structure and organization that Christ’s church requires, even though that same organizational structure is discussed numerous times in the New Testament.
